Tell us the story of how you got started. Take a moment to transport yourself back in time.
I was thriving in my corporate career—crushing sales goals, climbing the ladder—but deep down, something felt off. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I wanted more. More time. More freedom. More money. And let’s be real, more passion for what I was doing every day. I also knew I wanted to be present for my future family while still contributing financially. So, I started asking myself some big questions: What am I good at? What lights me up?
That’s when I realized my superpowers—connecting with people, hearing their stories, and learning from them. So, I decided to start a podcast. I’d interview women who had already taken the leap out of corporate and into entrepreneurship. What better way to figure out what’s possible than by talking to the ones who’d done it? Fast forward a few months, and life handed me a curveball: I was laid off while pregnant. That was my sign to go all in on Self StartHER. What started as a podcast has grown into this incredible community for women who are building businesses and balancing life at home.
What was your inspiration?
Honestly? The women around me. The ones who are ambitious, creative, and unapologetically going after what they want, even when the odds aren’t in their favor. Watching women navigate life, work, and motherhood with so much grit and grace—it’s impossible not to be inspired. I wanted to create a space where those women could connect, share their stories, and build their dreams together.
What did you do first? How did you make your idea real?
The first thing I did was look at my strengths. I love connecting with people, and I’m endlessly curious. So, I thought, Why not start by asking questions? That’s how the podcast idea was born. I reached out to women who’d already made the leap from corporate to entrepreneurship, slid into their DMs (with the most professional-but-friendly vibes, of course), and started booking interviews. I bought a mic, figured out how to record, and just started. It wasn’t perfect, but perfection isn’t the point. Progress is.
Who did you seek out for help? How did you find the right people to work with?
I leaned heavily on my network. I reached out to friends, former colleagues, and pretty much anyone who could connect me to inspiring women for interviews. I also became besties with Google and YouTube—DIY everything was my motto in the early days. And let’s not forget podcasts. I listened to all the podcasts about starting a business and building a brand. The key was just being open to learning and asking for help when I needed it. People genuinely want to help—sometimes all you have to do is ask.
Tell us the story of your first customer or sale?
My first big break came when I landed my first podcast guest—an incredible woman who had left her corporate job to start a business. I’ll never forget the moment she said “yes” to being interviewed. It gave me the confidence to keep reaching out to more women and eventually grow the podcast into something bigger. As the show gained traction, I started getting messages from listeners saying how much they related to the stories and how inspired they were to start their own journeys. That’s when I knew I was onto something. Seeing women take action because of Self StartHER was the ultimate pinch me moment.
